Kieran Maguire: Man City 'on the brink' after source's near-£400m reveal
Man City should be ‘cautious’ about their wage bill rising as high as £385million next season.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the expected rise in City’s wage bill if they win the treble.
Football Insider sources revealed on Thursday (18 May) that City’s wage bill could rise to around £385m after prize bonuses are taken into consideration.
The Manchester club are on the verge of winning three major trophies this season, with the Premier League already won and Pep Guardiola’s side in the final of both the Champions League and FA Cup.
It is understood that City are set to pay out over £20m in bonuses to their squad if they win in Europe this season, while domestic bonuses for winning the league and FA Cup are set at around £15m.
The bonuses awarded would take City’s wage bill to £385m, narrowly beating the £384m Premier League record set by rivals Man United in the 2021/22 season.
Maguire believes that City will have some leeway in wages as they are set to top the Uefa five-year coefficient and boost their revenue.
“I think Man City have to be cautious in terms of significantly increasing their wage bill next season,” Maguire told Football Insider.
“What they do have in their favour is that they are on the brink of topping Uefa’s five-year coefficient.
“If City do win the Champions League this season, it will greatly improve their ability to extract money and increase revenue.
“The additional revenues they are set to make from the Champions League this season will provide them significant leeway to increase wages.“
