Sofyan Amrabat: Major update on permanent Man United deal - sources

Man United have not yet made a final decision on signing on-loan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat permanently, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the Red Devils feel the 27-year-old is yet to show his best for the Old Trafford club after arriving from Fiorentina in the summer window.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that United will not rush to make a decision – but are unlikely to trigger his buy option if he cannot break into Erik ten Hag’s first eleven.

The Old Trafford club have already paid a reported loan fee of £8.5million to take Amrabat for the 2023-24 campaign, and can choose to sign him permanently for an additional £21.4million.

He was given the chance to start in Wednesday’s (29 November) crucial Champions League game against Galatasaray but failed to take his chance in a chaotic 3-3 draw.

The 27-year-old has made 12 appearances across all competitions this season but has completed 90 minutes on just one occasion.

Kobbie Mainoo, 18, has recently returned from injury and could now further restrict Amrabat’s role.

Mainoo starred in last week’s win over Everton at Goodison Park while the Morocco international managed just 18 minutes from the substitute’s bench.

Casemiro could also present a threat to Amrabat’s playing time, with the Brazil captain currently sidelined through injury.

Amrabat, who impressed for Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar, is under contract at Fiorentina until June 2025.

Man United sit sixth in the Premier League – six points adrift of first-place Arsenal.

The Red Devils are on the brink of elimination from the Champions League following their draw against Galatasaray.
