Revealed: Newcastle United hit by £10m+ Kylian Mbappe blow

Kylian Mbappe’s late equaliser for PSG could end up costing Newcastle United over £10million, Football Insider can reveal.

The Magpies were seconds away from securing a historic Champions League win in Paris before Mbappe’s late equaliser from the penalty spot.

Referee Szymon Marciniak awarded the controversial penalty following a VAR review for a handball offence by Tino Livramento in injury time.

Prior to the penalty, Newcastle were set to climb to second in Group F, putting Eddie Howe’s side in control of their qualification hopes going into the final group game against AC Milan.

However, Mbappe’s equaliser means Paris Saint-Germain can secure second place in the group if they beat Borussia Dortmund in two weeks’ time.

As per Uefa’s distribution model for the 2023/24 season, qualification to the round of 16 is worth £8.3million per club.

Qualification is still a possibility for Newcastle, but the last-gasp equaliser means they may now miss out on the additional prize money.

On top of the qualification fund, each win in the group stage is rewarded with a £2.4million cheque, whereas a draw is valued at just £800,000.

Newcastle have already earned £13.5million in prize money from reaching the group stage and an additional £4million based on results, but PSG’s controversial equaliser could be the difference between Newcastle missing out on an extra £10million from the qualification and win bonus.

Prize money in the knockout stages continues to increase as the tournament progresses, with a quarter-final place worth £9.1million.

Newcastle’s qualification hopes now rely on beating AC Milan at St James’ Park on 13 December alongside PSG failing to win away to Dortmund.
