Two Rangers deals must be done after source's reveal - 'There's no arguing', says Hutton

Philippe Clement must target a left-back and a striker as part of a two-player January signing blitz.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Scotland defender Alan Hutton feels the current personnel in these positions are either unreliable or could be facing an Ibrox departure.

As revealed by Football Insider (27 November), the Belgian is keen to bolster these positions in the winter and has confirmed work is underway to bring in new recruits.

Rangers have used both Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz at left-back this season, but the latter’s contract is up at the end of the season while the former has frequently been linked with an exit.

Cyriel Dessers has failed to meet goal scoring expectations this season and Hutton feels the Gers need a prolific striker to see significant improvement.

“I think the squad does need strengthening in January,” he told Football Insider.

“Obviously Clement is working with these players, but at times left-back can be an issue.

“Borna Barisic can get caught out, especially at one-on-one defending there’s no arguing that now, but he gives you something going forward.

“Ridvan Yilmaz has been a little bit in and out. Are his days numbered? Maybe.

“I’ve heard whispers about him leaving so that could be the situation there.

“And at striker too they need to improve. They need and out-and-out number nine who is going to score you 20 goals a season.

“Cyriel Dessers has had an opportunity but it’s not worked and Danilo is a very good player but needs to play alongside someone.

“They’re the positions that I think Clement will be looking at.”
