Sources: Major update on new Rangers director of football

Rangers’ search for a new director of football could put their January transfer plans on hold, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (27 November) that Gers boss Philippe Clement is keen to add a new left-back and striker in the new year.

Clement said he is unhappy with the “balance” of his Rangers squad – feeling he has too many players in some positions and not enough in other areas.

But with the Ibrox club yet to replace Ross Wilson, who left his post as sporting director in April, the Belgian’s plans could be paused until an appointment is finalised.

Wilson left Glasgow to join Nottingham Forest as their new sporting director.

Rangers had been linked with a move for Genk man Dimitri De Conde, who worked with Clement at the Belgian giants to deliver a league title in the 2018-19 campaign.

But De Conde has reaffirmed his loyalty to Genk and ruled out a potential link-up with Clement at Ibrox.

The Scottish Premiership giants now have around a month to seal an appointment before the January transfer window opens.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (28 November) that Clement will not be handed a huge budget in the mid-season window and will thus need to be savvy with his additions.

The four-time Belgian Pro League winner could use his extensive connections in his homeland to bring fresh blood to his Gers squad.

Rangers sit second in the league table and are eight points behind leaders Celtic having played a game less.

Clement’s side could secure safe passage to the Europa League knockout stages with a win over Aris Limassol on Thursday (30 November).

In other news, big news on Ianis Hagi returning to Rangers.
