Ex-CEO is 'concerned' after update on Tottenham probe - 'it's no big secret'

Ex-Everton chief Keith Wyness has claimed every club has “skeletons” as the Premier League probe Jermaine Defoe’s 2008 move from Tottenham to Portsmouth.

The 66-year-old, who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, admitted he is “concerned” about football becoming a “legal free-for-all”.

As per The Times (22 November), the Football Association will now review allegations of potentially serious breaches of agent rules in the transfer of Defoe to Portsmouth some 15 years ago.

Spurs avoided punishment following the original investigation – which found an unlicensed agent was used in the negotiations.

In the past, breaches of FA agent rules have led to punishments including clubs being deducted points and bans for directors.

The new controversy comes in the wake of Everton’s 10-point deduction and investigations into elite Premier League duo Chelsea and Man City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness said: “This is my big concern.

“All of a sudden, you may now see everybody suing everybody else.

“The whole thing just descends into a mess.

“There are skeletons in football, there’s no big secret.

“Deals have been done over the years that probably shouldn’t have. It’s been a soap opera, football.

“There’s probably skeletons in every closet at every club, somewhere.

“If this Tottenham case opens it up and it starts to become a legal free-for-all, then we might as well just watch the court hearings and not Match of the Day.”

In other news, Everton have ‘strong interest’ in Championship star.
