Pundit shares Michail Antonio verdict after new West Ham talks - 'Great signing'

West Ham United could upgrade on Michail Antonio if they can afford the “luxury”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former England and Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson claimed the Hammers had enough cover in his position, including Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus, to make up for the striker’s struggles.

As revealed by Football Insider (31 October), West Ham remain in talks with the 33-year-old over a new contract which expires at the end of the season.

Antonio has been absent from the scoresheet for most of the season, managing just two goals in 13 appearances in all competitions.

Robinson feels that West Ham’s excellent summer recruitment will be used by Moyes throughout the season but finances may hinder the club’s ability to sign an upgrade on the Jamaican international.

“I think Moyes has that cover with Mohammed Kudus, he’s been a great signing,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s the option. He can play down the centre as well, but also in recent weeks, we’ve seen Jarrod Bowen fill in that role and he’s been excellent. I’ve seen him a few times this season.

“With Kudus and Bowen, maybe not direct competitors but David Moyes certainly has options and he is not afraid to use them.

“I really like what he’s done there. They’ve progressed again whether or not he looks for a direct competitor for Antonio to strengthen his squad.

“It’s a squad that’s used to the rigours of European football and they’re in a much better place. In regards to Antonio, if the manager can afford that luxury, maybe it’s something he looks at.”
