Sources: Liverpool lead push for Man City to face swift Premier League crackdown
Liverpool are the club leading the push for the Premier League to resolve Man City’s financial fair play case, Football Insider has been told.
The Merseyside club are applying pressure to the Premier League to resolve their investigation on last season’s treble winners.
Liverpool ideally want a verdict to be reached before the start of the 2024/25 season.
As reported by The Athletic, the Premier League introduced new rules in September that ensure all financial discipline cases are ‘fast-tracked’ to ensure clarity around sanctions and points deductions.
An independent commission ruled last week that Everton were guilty of breaching financial regulations and the Toffees were subsequently handed a 10-point deduction.
The Premier League charged Man City with 115 breaches of financial regulations in February following a four-year investigation, while the investigation into Everton was launched in March.
The scale of City’s FFP case is evidently larger than the investigation into Everton’s sole charge, but rival clubs are beginning to grow frustrated at the continued delays to City’s case.
It is understood that Manchester United have also taken action to push for City’s case to be resolved.
Everton’s club statement following their points deduction also added that they will “monitor with great interest the decisions made in any other cases concerning the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.”
City’s charges relate to financial breaches dated between 2009 and 2018.
Similar to Everton’s case, City will be trialed in front of an independent commission.
If found guilty, the seven-time Premier League winners could face a major points deduction or even relegation from the top flight, with the Times reporting there is the “very real prospect of relegation”.
