Sources: Liverpool stance on signing new defender revealed after crushing Joel Matip update

Liverpool are not planning to rush into the market for a centre-back in January despite Joel Matip’s new long-term injury, sources have told Football Insider.

Matip, 32, was forced off with a knee problem in the 4-3 win over Fulham on Sunday (3 December) and Jurgen Klopp confirmed post-match that his lay-off “will not be a short one” in a shattering blow for the Merseysiders.

However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that there is still “no massive need” for a centre-back signing in January.

The Reds are keen to add a new centre-back to their squad in the long term and have been linked with the likes of Sporting CP star Goncalo Inacio and Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi.

It is believed any further injuries to the likes of Jarell Quansah, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate or Joe Gomez could force Klopp’s side into the market in January.

But if that quartet can remain fit, a deal for another defensive option could have to wait until next summer.

Matip has made 14 appearances across all competitions so far in the 2023-24 campaign.

The centre-back, who had started each of the last three Premier League games before his injury, is out of contract at the end of the season.

He has racked up 201 appearances since joining Liverpool on a free transfer in 2016.

Liverpool maintained their title challenge with the last-gasp win over Fulham and now sit one point behind league leaders Arsenal after 14 games.

Klopp’s side are next in action against Sheffield United on Wednesday (6 December).
