McAvennie slams 'idiot' Celtic fans as he's embarrassed at what's happened at 'my club'

Celtic fans were wrong to jeer during the Remembrance Sunday silence ahead of their Aberdeen clash.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie slammed the “idiot” supporters but noted that most of the Celtic Park crowd were “superb”.

Brendan Rodgers’ side thrashed the Dons 6-0 on Sunday (12 November) but the minute of remembrance was curtailed due to whistles and boos from crowds.

While this was not the first instance of Hoops fans booing moments of silence, Sky Sports opted to issue an on-air apology for the incident.

McAvennie admitted he understands why some fans voice their discontent but urged them to “stay quiet”.

“You get idiots at every club,” he told Football Insider.

“By and large, I don’t think it’s as bad as people made it out to be. Anyone who heard it on the TV could tell it was just a few, but they should have stayed quiet.

“The Green Brigade – you can’t blame them because they weren’t there.

“You get people who are not too happy because of things gone by but every family has someone [who fought in a war].

“It’s just unfortunate that it was my club, it’s embarrassing. I understand why people do it because of their grievances but it’s been passed on and passed on.

“The kids who are doing it don’t even know what they’re shouting about.

“The majority of fans were superb.”
