Expert: Celtic backed to land A-list striker among three January signings

Celtic must target a striker, a left-back and a centre-back this January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie claimed Celtic need first-team quality additions this winter rather than “projects”.

The club brought in 10 signings this summer including Luis Palma, Tomoki Iwata, Odin Thiago Holm and Paulo Bernardo.

However, the squad depth has left many Hoops fans wanting further recruitment during the upcoming transfer window in their bid to secure their 12th title in 13 seasons.

McAvennie is eager to see who Brendan Rodgers signs but warned that the bench options are not “on the same level” as the starters.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing who Brendan brings in this January, three signings could happen,” he told Football Insider.

“I think we need another centre-forward to be honest. I don’t think two strikers are enough for any club.

“I don’t think Oh is ready to be the number one choice yet. He’s a good player but he’s only young and I don’t think he’s ready to hold that down on his own.

“It’s up to Brendan obviously but for me, they need an A-list striker, a left-back and possibly a good centre-half.

“Celtic don’t need projects, they need players who walk straight into that team and it will make them so much stronger as a squad.

“I look at the squad and, no disrespect, you’ve got Stephen Welsh, Anthony Ralston, Scott Bain, Mikey Johnston.

“These boys have been there for a long time but with them, you’re not bringing on the same level as the first team.

“It’s got to change.”
