McAvennie backs England to win Euro 2024 but destroys Southgate

England will win Euro 2024 if Gareth Southgate doesn’t start “messing about”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie claimed no other nation are on the same level as the Three Lions, but the manager’s suspect tactics in the Euro 2020 final defeat remain a cause for concern.

Southgate’s side have emerged as a juggernaut on the international stage over the last few tournaments and currently sit fourth on Fifa’s rankings behind Argentina, France and Brazil.

England officially qualified for the Germany-based tournament with two games to spare after their 3-1 win over Italy at Wembley last month (17 October) and will face Malta and North Macedonia during the current international break.

McAvennie slammed Southgate for being “too negative” but backed them to win their first major tournament since 1966.

“I just can’t see anyone on the same level as England,” he told Football Insider.

“My biggest fear is Southgate if he starts messing about. I thought this at the last Euros when they were 1-0 up against Italy.

“He should have put the forward players on and ran them ragged. Instead, he didn’t give the men at the back time to recover.

“He’s too negative. Every year, whether it be the Euros or the World Cup, England fans think they’re going to win it.

“Scottish people don’t think so, but I think this could be their year. If Scotland aren’t going to win it I don’t mind seeing England win!”
