Newcastle ready to sign multiple players in January - 'There's no doubt', says pundit

Newcastle United will “no doubt” sign players this January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie claimed the Magpies need more quality if they want to compete for trophies.

Eddie Howe’s side have emerged as a European-quality side over the last two seasons and after clinching a fourth-place finish last season they currently sit sixth and just four points away from the Champions League spots.

Despite having top-quality talent like Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson, their squad depth is incomparable to the likes of Man City and Arsenal and their recent injury crisis has highlighted key holes in the team.

McAvennie is adamant that Newcastle will welcome the international break amid the lengthy injury list and dip into the market this winter to add the needed quality to compete.

“Some clubs love the international break,” he told Football Insider.

“It can’t come quick enough for some of them, it’s a blessing.

“For me, Newcastle only have about 14 or 15 players that they can rely on in the first team.

“You need more than that if you want to fire on all cylinders. They’re bringing players in in January, 100 per cent it’s happening, there’s no doubt about that.

“They’re way ahead of where I thought they’d be in this moment in time. I thought they’d be in the Champions League next year or the year after.

“But they’re so much further that I though but there needs to be more quality coming into that side for them to be winners.”
