Leeds should have accepted '£30m bid' for Gnonto - his 'head is full of nonsense', says expert

Leeds United should have sold Willy Gnonto this summer before his drastic drop in form.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed the Italian has a “problem” and that he would have taken the reported £25.7million plus add-ons offer from Everton.

Gnonto, 20, was the subject of a high-profile attempt to get a move away from Elland Road during the transfer window and was kept out of the squad.

As revealed by Football Insider (6 November), Gnonto is unhappy with his situation at Elland Road and there will be January interest.

Despite making amends with the club and his significant price tag, the versatile forward has not emerged as a mainstay for Daniel Farke’s side and has started just five league games, scoring one goal.

McAvennie suggests that something is amiss for Gnonto.

“Well obviously something’s happened,” he told Football Insider.

“There’s been a problem with the boy. Whether it’s a problem with injuries or a problem with who’s looking after him.

“When some players get a price tag of £30million, they become, in their head, better players than what they are, especially when they’re young.

“They don’t seem to understand that you’ve got to do it week in and week out to be that player.

“I don’t know what the situation is with the boy. If they could have sold him for £30million after that Everton bid, my god I would have taken that.

“From what I’ve gathered, he’s gone from top to bottom in a very short space of time, so something is wrong whether it’s the management or whoever is filling his head full of nonsense.”
