McAvennie digs at Rangers star Borna Barisic after 'embarrassing' development

Borna Barisic being dropped from the Croatian national side is no surprise considering his poor form for Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed the left-back has not been playing well for the Gers this season.

The 30-year-old was axed from the Croatia squad ahead of key Euro 2024 qualifiers against Latvia and Armenia after being criticised for his performances during the last international break.

Barisic picked up a knock against Hibernian but is set to be fit before the qualifiers in three weeks.

McAvennie suggested Barisic only got a lot of game time before Philippe Clement’s arrival due to the “embarrassing” lack of depth at left-back.

“I don’t think he’s been playing well,” he told Football Insider.

“He has been getting a lot of game time because Rangers have not really had anyone at left-back.

“They’ve played Ben Davies, who’s never been a left-back, he’s so far away from being a left-back it’s embarrassing.

“Barisic isn’t getting a game at Rangers [under Clement]. He knows it himself that he’s a decent player, and he knows if he’s not playing well you don’t get picked for your national team – simple as that.

“It’s not going to do anything [for his confidence]. He’s not been playing well, he’s been injured. Maybe the managers want to try something else.

“He’s got enough problems trying to hold down a place at Rangers before he worries about his international future.”
