West Ham told to agree new deal with player fans 'never want to play for club ever again' - expert

West Ham United must renew Michail Antonio’s contract as he suits the club’s style of play.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie slammed West Ham’s scouting of strikers after a decade of poor recruitment.

The Jamaican international’s contract is set to expire this summer, but the Hammers have the option to extend for a further season.

His form has been inconsistent since joining from Nottingham Forest in 2015 despite scoring 77 goals in 284 appearances.

McAvennie claims the 33-year-old suits the way David Moyes wants to play and is a rare case of good recruitment in the striker position.

However, supporters ripped into his display in Saturday’s defeat to Brentford, with some claiming he should “never play for West Ham again”.

“I think with the way West Ham play at the moment, Antonio is pivotal to that,” he told Football Insider.

“Every other striker in the last couple of years, or the last 10 years, can’t play the way West Ham want to play, so who’s been scouting for them?

“Antonio, when West Ham play counter-attacking, he’s major because he holds the ball, and brings others into play.

“He’s got that but Danny Ings hasn’t. Ings is a goal scorer – and a good one. But they’re not creating enough chances to get the goals.

“Ings has to be strong and bring players in but that’s not his game. I don’t get how they’re picking their strikers, I don’t get it.

“But Antonio? I’d say you have to give him a contract if he wants to stay, but he’s got to be on the form that he’s been hitting recently. [Against Everton] he was hopeless.”
