Kieran Maguire: Gordon is key to Everton 'facing another punishment' in devastating new twist

The sale of Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United may save Everton from facing further points deductions for recording excessive losses.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that it is ‘unlikely’ that the Toffees will face further punishment but not impossible.

Everton were deducted 10 points this month after being deemed guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial and sustainability rules.

As reported by The Guardian, the Merseyside club exceeded the allowed losses in the Premier League by £19.5million over a three-year period.

By Premier League regulations, clubs are only allowed to lose a maximum of £105million over three years, meaning Everton could face further penalties if they post huge losses again.

However, Maguire is confident that Everton will avoid further penalties thanks to the £45million sale of Gordon to Newcastle as well as the club’s efforts to lower the wage bill.

I think it is unlikely that Everton could face another punishment, but not impossible,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Finances have improved in the sense that they’ve got a few high earners off the payroll.

They also sold Anthony Gordon in 2023 and because he’s an academy player, that’s pure profit on the books.

“So I think they should be okay provided the wage bill has not gone too high.

But there’s limited room for manoeuvre.

The Premier League by all accounts were suggesting to Everton when they were buying players that it comes with a risk.

“You can understand the frustration of Everton fans because they’ve acted in good faith and put trust in the senior executives of the club.

But through a combination of financial mismanagement, complacency and arrogance they have left the club in this position.

Of course, a lot of those people are no longer at the club.
