Kieran Maguire reveals how Rangers can match £40m Celtic reveal - 'this is the only way…'

Rangers have to prioritise success in Europe if they want to close the financial gap to their arch-rivals Celtic.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the difference in prize money between domestic and continental competition.

Rangers released their annual report last Monday (13 November) revealing overall revenue of £83million and a profit of £250,000.

In comparison, Celtic’s revenue in 2022/23 climbed to £119.9m with the Glasgow club earning a profit before tax of £40.7m.

Both clubs competed in the Champions League last season and were knocked out of the competition in the group stage, but Celtic enjoyed more domestic success with Ange Postecoglou leading the side to win the treble.

Maguire believes Rangers are disadvantaged financially compared to Celtic because of Ibrox’s capacity, but insists that European success will help to close the gap.

The only way that Rangers can close that gap is through success in Europe,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“Celtic have been spectacularly successful and they’ve got a lot of things right in recent years.

They have the benefit of having a bigger stadium.

“So Rangers have to do more in order to equal Celtic’s financial results because they’re starting with a smaller stadium and therefore face a financial disadvantage.

So success in Europe has to be their focus as the prize money difference from finishing either first or second in Scotland is only a few hundred thousand.

That won’t move the dial, but European success does.

We know that Rangers’ results in the Champions League last year were poor.

A win and a draw in the group stage would have added an extra £4million in revenue which would have boosted profits.

Those four points might have been enough to drop down into the Europa League and continue in Europe so it is fine margins.
