Kieran Maguire: Glazers have agreed the mother of all deals as new Man United details emerge

The Glazers are happy to hand sporting control over to Sir Jim Ratcliffe at Man United in order to avoid blame from fans.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Glazers are set to increase their wealth from the takeover while also avoiding the responsibility of United’s on-pitch success.

Ratcliffe is on the verge of completing a minority investment in the Red Devils for a fee of more than £1.25bn.

As first reported by The Telegraph, Ratcliffe’s team included a clause in his investment deal that will see him take full control over sporting matters at Old Trafford.

The Glazer family are set to retain a controlling stake in the Manchester club, but Ratcliffe will have full control over footballing decisions.

Changes behind the scenes are already underway at Old Trafford with the club announcing on Wednesday (15 November) that CEO Richard Arnold is set to leave before the end of the year.

Maguire believes the takeover agreement is a ‘win-win deal’ for the Glazers as they will increase their profits and lower responsibility.

“Handing over sporting control is a get-out-of-jail-free card for the Glazers,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Because if things don’t work out on the pitch, they can now argue that they’re not the problem.

They will pass over that responsibility to Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

If things do work out on the pitch, then it increases the value of the club and they’ve still got a significant share.

So it’s a win-win deal for the Glazers.

We know that they’ve already milked Manchester United significantly in the form of dividends and minor share payouts over the years.

This is simply going to add to their wealth.

“And on top of that, they still have a significant share in one of the biggest brands in world sport.
