Kieran Maguire: Liverpool are secretly working on 'monstrous' plan after Super League twist
John Henry will still want Liverpool to be involved in the Super League if plans for the project are revived.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Liverpool hierarchy will want a system where European qualification is guaranteed.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez spoke about the revival of a Super League project last Saturday (11 November), claiming it “is more necessary than ever”.
Liverpool were one of six Premier League clubs to initially announce their intentions to join the Super League proposal in 2021.
The Merseyside club eventually pulled out of the Super League plans following backlash from fans and pundits, but plans to reshape European football have continued with Perez leading the charge.
Maguire believes Liverpool’s owners would still want to join a Super League despite knowing how unpopular it is with fans.
“Owners of the ‘Big Six’ clubs will still want to be involved in some form of Super League,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“Whether it be John Henry or the Glazers – they don’t care about football.
“They do care about money and their biggest fear is missing out on the Champions League just like Liverpool did due to their league finish last season.
“They want guaranteed participation where you don’t have to do very much to be at the top of the table when it comes to generating income.
“I think they’ve now read the room in relation to how unpopular it would be with fans.
“But if there’s any way that they can create this monstrosity, and this is what they’re trying to do with the latest proposals, then they’ll be open to it.“
