Sources: Tottenham in 'massive' race to sign Kalvin Phillips

Tottenham are monitoring the situation of Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips ahead of the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (1 December) that Spurs are exploring a potential deal for a new midfielder in the new year after Rodrigo Bentancur’s latest injury blow.

The Uruguay international is set to be sidelined until February following an ankle ligament tear sustained in the 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa last week.

Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are also set to go on international duty with Senegal and Mali respectively at the African Cup of Nations in the new year.

Those three absences have led Tottenham to explore a deal for Man City’s Phillips – but a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Spurs are aware they face “massive competition” for the 27-year-old’s signature.

The England international has been told he is free to leave in January by the treble-winners.

It is believed Newcastle are very keen to land Phillips in the winter window following Sandro Tonali’s ban, while David Moyes’ West Ham are also ready to land him.

Serie A leaders Juventus are also huge admirers of the ex-Leeds United ace.

Phillips has made just eight appearances across all competitions this season totalling 215 minutes of action.

The midfielder, who is under contract until June 2028, has made just five starts since joining City for a reported fee of £45million last summer (2022).

He remains a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England squad but has admitted he will need to consider a move away from the Etihad Stadium to maintain his place in the international set-up.

Tottenham have recently dropped to fifth in the Premier League after their recent injury crisis – which has seen the likes of Micky van de Ven, James Maddison and Richarlison suffer long-term layoffs.

Phillips could face Spurs when City play Ange Postecoglou’s side on Sunday (3 December).
