Sources: Man United star Antony set for major new role

Man United star Antony is set for a key first-team role in the winter months despite reports suggesting he is set for a January exit, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the Red Devils have no plans to sell the 23-year-old despite his struggles since joining last summer (2022).

Manager Erik ten Hag, who previously managed Antony at Ajax, has faith that the winger can be a Premier League star.

He is now set for far more first-team involvement as the festive schedule approaches.

The Brazil international has made six Premier League starts among 12 appearances across all competitions this season but is yet to score or assist, and the only time he has completed 90 minutes came in the EFL Cup.

Antony has also lost his international place and has not been part of the last three Selecao squads.

Scrutiny over the winger’s performances comes just 18 months after Man United spent a reported £85million to land him.

Fans and pundits alike have been critical of the 23-year-old’s performances, with his lack of attacking output coming into particularly sharp focus.

Antony managed eight goals and three assists in 44 appearances across all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign.

But he is yet to register a goal contribution in the new season and is only a sporadic feature in the United starting lineup.

He has been named in the starting eleven for 50% of the Red Devils’ games so far this season – but that figure is set to increase as the festive schedule gets underway.

Man United sit sixth in the Premier League after 12 games and have two Champions League games against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich to keep their European campaign alive.

Ten Hag’s side currently sit bottom of Group A.
