Sources: Man City 'very confident' after points deduction bombshell

Man City chiefs are supremely confident of defending their 115 outstanding Premier League charges – even after Everton’s bombshell point deduction, sources have told Football Insider.

In February, Man City were charged with breaches of top-flight financial rules between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

The case was referred to an independent commission but no further information has been released.

Everton have since been slapped with a 10-point deduction by an independent panel after recording more than the allowed losses over three years up to the 2021-22 season.

That punishment is the biggest in Premier League history, leading to fears that City could be handed a far bigger deduction.

But a well-placed source has told Football Insider that the treble-winners are “very confident” of being found not guilty and have pulled out all the stops with a heavily-manned legal team to help fight the case.

It is believed it could be up to two years before the case is heard and a verdict finalised due to the sheer volume of paperwork which needs analysing before a decision is reached.

However, Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (21 November) that Liverpool are leading the push for the Premier League to resolve Man City’s case – ideally before the start of the 2024-25 campaign.

Sources say that is unlikely and bordering on impossible due to the scale of the allegations and investigation.

It is believed Man United have also taken action to push for City’s case to be resolved.

On the pitch, Man City won a historic treble which included triumph in the Champions League – and are the favourites to repeat that feat in the 2023-24 campaign.

Pep Guardiola‘s side are next in action against Liverpool on Saturday (25 November).
