Sources: Liverpool teen Scanlon has now 'really impressed' coaching staff at training ground

Liverpool youngster Calum Scanlon has made a huge impression on coaching staff in training, sources have told Football Insider.

An Anfield source told Football Insider that the 18-year-old has “really impressed” staff at their Kirkby headquarters and that his game has been taken to the “next level” this year.

The view among the coaches is that Scanlon needs to strengthen physically but they remain confident that the left-back has the technical and game awareness attributes to become a first-team player in the Premier League.

The teenager, who made the switch to Merseyside from Birmingham City’s youth academy for £500,000 in December 2020, made his senior debut in Liverpool’s 5-1 Europa League thrashing of Toulouse last month (26 October).

He replaced Darwin Nunez and had his first 24 minutes of senior action at Anfield.

Scanlon has made the bench five times for Jurgen Klopp in all competitions this season including in two Premier League clashes.

He has been a regular for England youth sides and started for the Under-19s in their recent 6-0 victory over Romania.

Alongside the likes Jarell Quansah, James McConnell, Luke Chambers and Kaide Gordon, Scanlon is considered one of Liverpool’s hottest young prospects.

The Reds fought out a convincing 3-0 victory in the Premier League against Brentford before the international break, but will face league leaders Manchester City for a chance to go to the top of the table in their first game back.
