'Trust me, that's what happens' - Hutton reacts after Giorgos Giakoumakis Celtic confession

Giorgos Giakoumakis made the right decision to leave Celtic after his admission about his exit.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers and Scotland defender Alan Hutton admitted that the Greek international was the Hoops’ “best finisher” before his move to MLS side Atalanta United earlier this year.

Giakoumakis revealed that he had a poor relationship with then-Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou and claimed that not receiving respect from “the people or from the club” forced the move.

The 28-year-old has thrived in the United States after scoring 17 goals since joining in February and even beat out Lionel Messi for the 2023 MLS Newcomer of the Year award.

Hutton claims that departures of this nature happen in football but the Hoops are now “crying out” for a goalscorer like Giakoumakis.

“Of course, I feel for him,” he told Football Insider.

“You don’t want to hear that about any footballer. But it happens at every football club, whether you want to believe it or not.

“Trust me, that’s what really happens. If certain managers don’t want you there, they will find ways to get you out of there. “If that’s how he felt, I think he made the right decision for his footballing career.

“Personally, if he did stay I think he would be more prominent in this Celtic team moving forward – they’re crying out for someone like him.

“I thought he was the best finisher they had. Oh Hyeon-gyu they’ve brought in who’s trying to be that guy, but obviously, he’s still young and getting used to this culture.

“But Giakoumakis was a real good player.”
