Chelsea hijack Liverpool deal as Romeo Lavia offer submitted - sources

Chelsea are now plotting a full-scale hijack of Liverpool’s pursuit of Southampton star Romeo Lavia, sources have told Football Insider.

The Blues have set their sights on a move for the 19-year-old as talks over a deal for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, 21, have hit a stumbling block.

It has been widely reported that Chelsea have seen a third bid, which is believed to be worth around £80million, rejected by the Seagulls.

The Londoners could now abandon their move for the Ecuador international to prioritise a deal for Lavia.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Chelsea can bid closer to Southampton’s £50million asking price than Liverpool have.

The Merseysiders have seen a bid of £34million plus £4million in add-ons rejected by the Championship club.

Liverpool have held extensive talks over a deal for the Belgium international this summer as they look to replace high-profile duo Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

Football Insider first revealed Chelsea’s interest in Lavia back in March – alongside Arsenal and Man United, as well as former club Man City.

City will be entitled to 20% of any fee received for his services and hold a £40million buy-back option which becomes active next summer (2024).

The 19-year-old, whose contract at Southampton runs until June 2027, turned out 34 times across all competitions last season.

He has taken part in each of the Saints’ pre-season friendlies so far but was withdrawn at half-time against Bournemouth on Tuesday (25 July).

Manager Russell Martin subsequently admitted the youngster “has a lot in his head” as the race for his signature hots up.

In other news, Chelsea in advanced talks to sell defender – but he doesn’t want to go.
