Kieran Maguire: Man United 'are walking FFP tightrope' after 'spectacular failure'
Man United are walking an FFP ‘tightrope’ because of poor transfer business and their possible elimination from the Champions League.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that United’s FFP issues could easily be resolved if the Glazer family injected money into the club.
The Red Devils are at risk of Champions League elimination following their dramatic 3-3 draw with Galatasaray midweek, with Erik ten Hag now needing results to go in his favour when United face Bayern Munich in the final group clash.
Crashing out of Europe would cost Man United financially, with the club missing out on more matchday revenue as well as significant prize money from Uefa.
The Manchester giants already face Financial Fair Play limitations after recording losses in successive years – including a £42million loss over the 2022/23 season.
Maguire believes United have been a ‘spectacular failure’ when it comes to player trading which has left them in financial trouble.
“Manchester Untied have been a spectacular failure when it comes to player sales over the last decade,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“Compared to their peer group, they have generated around £500million less than Chelsea and substantially less than Man City and Liverpool.
“This has been the main driving force that has led the club to walk a tightrope when it comes to FFP.
“There is no indication that they will make any significant sales at present so non-participation in the Champions League knockout phases worsens their situation.
“The Glazers could provide a £90million boost to the club’s FFP limits, but they have been reluctant to inject new money into the club in the form of shares.
“So they do face FFP issues, but a result against Bayern Munich in a few weeks could rectify some of them.“
