Carragher slams Liverpool defence after 'stupid' mistake v Everton

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has criticised the Liverpool players after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds had dominated before a clumsy challenge by centre-back Dejan Lovren on Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin resulted in a spot-kick – which was scored by Wayne Rooney was the Toffees took an unlikely share of the points.

Carragher was disappointed with Liverpool for dropping points in a game they had dominated, in terms of both possession and chances.

The Sky Sports pundit singled out defender Lovren, who had no need to make the challenge with Calvert-Lewin moving away from goal.

“[Klopp is a] very frustrated manager, and rightly so. It was a game Liverpool should have won quite comfortably,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“Why is [Lovren] running at that pace when Calvert-Lewin is running to the corner flag? It’s a foul, it’s a penalty, I have no doubt about that. It’s a very stupid thing to do. It’s the one real attack Everton had, and that’s what is frustrating.

“Liverpool’s defenders weren’t asked to do much today, and the one time they were asked, they made a stupid mistake, so they’ve only got themselves to blame.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was furious with the decision and was involved in a fiery exchange with Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davison during his post-match interview.

Though Carragher disagreed with Klopp’s view that the referee’s decision to award the penalty was incorrect, he sympathised with the Liverpool boss and admitted he could understand his frustration.

Liverpool took the lead on 42 minutes through a spectacular effort from Mohamed Salah, before Sadio Mane missed a great chance to make it 2-0 just before half-time.

The hosts continued to create opportunities were made to pay for not taking their chances as Everton, who had barley threatened, were awarded a spot-kick, which Rooney smashed straight down the middle.

In other Liverpool news, Reds legend John Arne Riise has criticised Klopp for this decision he made against Everton.
