Kieran Maguire: VAR bill could climb to '£10m+' after Arsenal complaint
Arsenal frustration towards VAR errors is understandable given that each Premier League position is worth millions of pounds.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider his views on VAR as Premier League clubs push for major changes.
As revealed by The Telegraph, football’s lawmakers have opened talks about changing VAR amid backlash from top-flight clubs.
Arsenal published a club statement last Sunday (5 November) urging the PGMOL to address officiating in the Premier League after Anthony Gordon’s goal against them stood despite controversy about the ball going out of play.
Liverpool have also previously written to the PGMOL after Luis Diaz’s goal against Tottenham was incorrectly ruled out.
Maguire insists that VAR has achieved its aim of reducing errors and should stay in football, but complaints from clubs are understandable when each position in the table is worth millions.
“The value of each individual position in the table is worth around about £2.5 million,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“At the end of the season, two or three points could be the difference between four places and it could be worth £10million.
“So you can understand Arsenal’s frustration and you can understand why clubs want to get as many decisions right as possible.
“VAR was introduced to reduce the number of errors, and it has achieved that aim.
“But all of the focus is on the one percent of incorrect decisions.
“I think that’s distorting the broader benefits that have come as a result of VAR.
“The Luis Diaz goal at Spurs was an absolute howler and when Brighton played at Crystal Palace last year they drew the lines against the wrong defender.
“That’s just shoddy operational issues.
“The broader impact of VAR is that it has reduced the number of errors on the pitch, and I can’t really see why anybody wants to go back to a situation where you have more errors.“
