Sources: Bayern Munich set sights on 'shock' deal for Tottenham star Eric Dier

Bayern Munich are plotting a move for Tottenham defender Eric Dier in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The 29-year-old is coming into the final six months of his Spurs contract and no progress has been made on a new deal.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that it is now likely Dier will leave the club in January – or next summer in a free transfer.

Bayern Munich are keen to sign the England international due to his versatility in two positions – centre-back and defensive midfield.

The Bundesliga champions, managed by Thomas Tuchel, are keen to reinforce both of those areas as they target success both in Germany and in the Champions League.

A move for Dier would come as a shock due to his status as fourth-choice centre-back at Tottenham, where he has been roundly panned by supporters in recent seasons.

He is on the list at Bayern and it is believed the long-serving Spurs star could be signed for a relatively cheap fee due to his contract situation.

The January window is likely to present Ange Postecoglou’s side with the last chance to cash in on Dier.

Dier has recently been restored to the Tottenham side following injury to Micky van de Ven and the suspension of Cristian Romero.

He started for the first time this season on Saturday (11 November) as Spurs lost 2-1 away at Wolves.

Last week, he made his first appearance of the 2023-24 campaign as Postecoglou’s side fell to a 4-1 derby defeat against Chelsea.

Dier, who earned his last England cap at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, joined Tottenham in 2014.

He has made 362 appearances for the Lilywhites, notching 13 goals and 12 assists.
