Campbell slams 'awful' Arsenal stars who let down Patino

Kevin Campbell has claimed Arsenal do not have a deep enough squad after their “awful” display at Nottingham Forest was followed by Thursday’s goalless draw at Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker said experienced players were especially exposed in the 1-0 defeat at the City Ground.

Arsenal failed to register a shot on target on Sunday as they were knocked out of the FA Cup.

Mikel Arteta made a host of changes for both matches but named a strong side against Forest as well as a full-strength team at Liverpool.

There was also a full debut in the FA Cup for highly-rated 18-year-old Charlie Patino.

Campbell slammed senior Gunners players for not helping Patino through his first start.

“I’ve got to say I felt sorry for the young lad Patino,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He has come in and everyone around him is awful.

“Everyone is more experienced than him. In a game like that the senior player should be helping the youngsters but that wasn’t the case. The other players did not play well and did not help him. He got nothing.

“It was terrible. It just shows that this squad is not deep enough.”

Speaking after the loss (9 January), as quoted by Football.London, Arteta said: “I want to get the best out of the players that we have.

“I think it’s clear where we need to strengthen. But at the moment it’s what we have and with what we have we have to play.”
