Tavares 'embarrassed' after 'horrible' Arsenal update in last 24 hours - pundit

Nuno Tavares has been “embarrassed” at Arsenal and it is “horrible”, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Man City and England defender delivered his verdict after Tavares was dragged off after 35 minutes during Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Sunday (9 January).

Mikel Arteta told club media yesterday (12 January) the left-back has reacted well in training to his decision.

The Gunners boss insisted it was part of the development of any young player.

“It’s horrible, it’s embarrassing,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“But equally as a player you know you’ve had a shocker. You don’t get dragged off if you’re playing well.

“You know it yourself, you are your own biggest critic. He knows he was having a bit of shocker but it was compounded by the embarrassment of getting taken off before half-time.

“At half-time, you can get away with it and it gets lost a little bit. I know he threw his gloves on the ground but if any player gets taken off after 35 minutes because they’re having one, I’d expect a bad reaction.

“That’s not just aimed at the manager that’s frustration at himself for being rubbish as much as it is for being taken off.

“The manager will say ‘Sorry, I had to do it and now it’s on you for to go out and perform’.

“It’s a tough learning curve.”

Tavares was making his 18th appearance across all competitions for Gunners at the City Ground.

The 21-year-old moved to Arsenal from Benfica in the summer for a fee of around £8million.
