'What is wrong with you?' - Aston Villa fans shocked by Emiliano Martinez 'calamity' in 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest

Aston Villa fans have reacted with shock after Emi Martinez’s “calamity” against Nottingham Forest on Sunday (5 November).

The Argentine saved a long-range Orel Mangala strike but remarkably failed to keep the bouncing rebound out of the net, extending Steve Cooper’s side’s lead.

Martinez, who has been dubbed the best goalkeeper in the world after winning the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, was hounded by fans with Villa suffering a 2-0 loss at the City Ground.

The 31-year-old World Cup winner has struggled at times this season despite Villa’s excellent form and has kept just two clean sheets in all competitions this season.

The defeat meant Villa failed to gain ground on Liverpool ahead of them, while fellow European chasers Newcastle are now just two points behind Unai Emery’s side.

The Villa fanbase took to social media to share their anger at the goalkeeper.

One fan joked that a clone of Martinez is sent to Aston Villa as his performances for his national side are often far better than for his club.

Another was more sympathetic towards Martinez but was still astounded by the error.

Another fan claimed the shot-stopper needed to “do better” in the moment.

One fan mocked Martinez and suggested he was attempting to make a “save for the cameras”, which backfired.

Other fans simply urged the team to wake up after Martinez’s “howler”.

One fan pointed blame at Martinez for both of Forest’s goals and was critical of his handling of Mangala’s long-range effort.

This fan had one simple question for the goalkeeper.
