Sources: Aston Villa handed double boost in bid to sign Kalvin Phillips

Aston Villa have been given a double boost in their bid to sign Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips this summer, Football Insider understands.

The midfielder is planning to quit his hometown club even if they survive Premier League relegation.

A Villa source has told Football Insider the club are lining up a move for Phillips ahead of the summer and have been given encouragement on a number of fronts.

The 26-year-old believes this summer could be the right time to move, especially on the back of a difficult campaign at Elland Road that could end in a return to the Championship.

Moreover, Phillips has yet to agree terms on a new contract with Leeds despite opening talks last September.

The England international’s current deal runs until the end of June 2024.

That has opened the door to Premier League rivals, with Villa leading the stampede for his services.

Phillips is valued at the £60million mark by Leeds after his Euro 2020 exploits last summer.

Aston Villa are in the market for midfield reinforcements in the next window.

Steven Gerrard does not believe his current squad is capable of delivering the owners’ ambitions.

Furthermore, there is uncertainty over Douglas Luiz‘s future at Villa Park.

The Brazil international is entering the final 12 months of his current deal.

Phillips has struggled with injury for Leeds United this season.

He has been limited to 21 appearances across all competitions.
