Sources: Tottenham two-man January signing plan revealed

Tottenham are keen to sign a centre-back and defensive midfielder in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Manager Ange Postecoglou has hinted at activity in the new year, claiming the mid-season window will be “important” for Spurs.

The Lilywhites are keen to build on their good start to the season which sees them just two points adrift of leaders Man City with a game in hand.

A defensive midfielder is likely to be on the agenda for Tottenham with Postecoglou keen to bolster his options in the middle of the park.

Spurs are set to lose key duo Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr to the African Cup of Nations early next year, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could leave after coming close to quitting in the most recent summer window.

Centre-back is also an area Postecoglou is keen to bolster in January.

First-choice duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been a key part of Spurs’ early-season success but the Australian is keen to keep them on their toes by adding a new option.

Football Insider revealed last month (23 October) that Tottenham are among the sides monitoring Club America and Uruguay defender Sebastian Caceres.

Johan Lange has recently left Aston Villa to join Spurs as their new technical director and started work at the club last week.

Tottenham spent big money on Van de Ven, Brennan Johnson and James Maddison in the summer window with talisman Harry Kane raking in a club-record fee after leaving for Bayern Munich.

But Kane’s departure has not handicapped Postecoglou – who has his new side sitting second in the Premier League.

Spurs have the opportunity to take back first place from Man City when they face Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea on Monday night (6 November).
