Ex-Everton CEO stunned by what he's 'heard' about Man City FFP case - 'it's huge'

Ex-Everton chief Keith Wyness has claimed Man City have an astonishing team of 30 in-house lawyers as they fight 115 potential breaches of Premier League rules.

The 66-year-old, who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, revealed the Toffees didn’t have a dedicated legal representative during his tenure at the club.

According to the Daily Mail (30 November), Man City’s case has been scheduled to be heard by an independent panel in Autumn 2024.

A verdict is expected to be delivered by the start of the 2025-26 season but any appeals will likely delay the outcome.

If found guilty of financial breaches, City could face a significant points deduction similar to the punishment handed to Everton in November – or even relegation.

But Football Insider revealed last month (24 November) that Man City chiefs are supremely confident of defending their 115 outstanding charges.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness said: “I’ve heard that Man City have a 30-strong in-house legal department, which is huge.

“We didn’t even have an in-house lawyer when I was at Everton.

“When I was at Villa, we had one lawyer and two assistants.

“That gives you some idea of the scale we’re talking about. Whether that number is accurate or not, I’m not sure, but I’m sure it’s a big department.

“Now the implied threat there is that they will tie you up in court, and they can tie the Premier League, or the FA, or UEFA up in court.

“They will fight you to a standstill and cost you a bloody fortune. That’s what seems to have happened.

“That’s one strategy. When you’ve got a wealthy backer, maybe that’s the way to go.

“Maybe if Usmanov hadn’t have been sanctioned, and was able to help Moshiri – there may have been a different legal team involved with Everton’s case.”
