Kieran Maguire shares verdict on £100m Ivan Toney deal with Chelsea in pole position

Brentford are in a position to demand a ‘premium’ price for Ivan Toney as Chelsea and other Premier League clubs are lacking a prolific goalscorer.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Toney’s value in today’s market.

As reported by Sky Sports, Brentford want £100million in order to sell Toney in January as they intend to keep him until the end of the season.

The 27-year-old England international is currently unavailable as he is serving a suspension for gambling offences, but his impressive goalscoring record with the Bees has caught the eye of Premier League giants.

Football Insider revealed last Wednesday (8 November) that Chelsea have climbed above Arsenal in the race to sign Toney in 2024.

Maguire cited Harry Kane’s £100million move to Bayern Munich this summer as a price point for Brentford to build upon.

Premium prices are being paid for strikers because ultimately football is a scoring game,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Anything that can give you a margin such as a prolific goalscorer makes those players particularly valuable.

If Harry Kane can go for £100million at the age of 30 to Bayern Munich, then that lays the foundation for Brentford’s valuation.

There’s been some pretty expensive strikers who have transferred to the Premier League where things haven’t worked out.

But the best way to describe Toney is very much the best of the rest outside the top six clubs.

Therefore you can understand Brentford wanting to maximise his value in the market.

Clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham are genuinely short of a scorer who can make the difference between winning the Premier League or not, or qualifying for the Champions League and not.

Brentford are in a position to utilise that.
