Revealed: Tottenham accelerate midfield signing plan after crushing triple blow

Tottenham are exploring a potential January deal for a new midfielder after Rodrigo Bentancur’s latest injury blow, sources have told Football Insider.

Spurs are in urgent need of a midfielder and it is believed that they have accelerated their winter recruitment plans after new internal talks in the last few days.

The Uruguay international is set to be sidelined until February following an ankle ligament tear sustained in the 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa on 26 November.

The Lilywhites will also see Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma leave England in January to play in the African Cup of Nations for Senegal and Mali respectively.

The triple blow leaves Postecoglou with minimal midfield options as he awaits the return of other key players.

Injuries have hampered Spurs’ excellent start to the 2023-24 campaign, with Ivan Perisic, Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon and Richarlison joining Bentancur in the treatment room.

Tottenham are keen to make additions this winter – and as Football Insider revealed on November 25, Postecoglou’s side are also ready to accelerate their move for an attacker signing in the January transfer window.

The club spent hefty fees in the summer on Maddison, van de Ven and Brennan Johnson but sold record goalscorer Harry Kane for a club-record fee.

Johan Lange left Aston Villa in October to become Spurs’ new technical director, which could see him have a significant influence on the club’s winter transfer plans.

Spurs have dropped from the summit of the Premier League to fifth following three consecutive defeats and are next in action against Man City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday (3 December).
