Pundit suggests Man City star Kevin De Bruyne has 'behind-the-scenes' problem

Paul Robinson has suggested there may be an “issue” behind the scenes with Man City star Kevin De Bruyne.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said fitness or tactics could be behind De Bruyne exemption from the starting lineup in recent weeks.

De Bruyne was only a second-half substitute in Man City’s 1-0 loss to Spurs on Sunday (5 February).

The centre-midfielder was an unused substitute in the reverse fixture two weeks ago.

Prior to Sunday’s match against Spurs, Guardiola revealed De Bruyne’s omission was tactical.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on De Bruyne, Robinson said: “I think Guardiola is overthinking his team selection.

“Look, we do not know what is happening behind the scenes. There may be issues. We do not know the levels the players are at. We are not the ones monitoring them.

“City are back in the Champions League later this month. There is still a lot of games to be played. Perhaps De Bruyne is being rested. Guardiola may not always just be picking a team for the opposition they’re playing against.

“From a Man City point of view, you want De Bruyne to be playing every game. Who knows if it is tactical or whether it is to do with his fitness. We can only wonder why he is being left out.

“He is by far their best player. He is the best midfielder in the Premier League.”
