Kieran Maguire: Glazers have record-breaking Man United plan

The Glazers will look to monetise fans in Asia to help Man United catch up to Man City’s record-breaking revenue.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Red Devils can pip their cross-city rivals financially if they find a way to monetise their global fanbase.

United’s updated financial accounts for the 2022/23 season revealed that the club generated revenue of £648million.

It was a Premier League record at the time, but the record was short-lived with City announcing revenue of £713million – £65million more than their Manchester rivals.

City’s growth in commercial revenue and prize money from their historic treble-winning season means they are now beating United both on and off the pitch.

Maguire explained that lack of on-pitch success has cost United, but they can regain their financial dominance if they find a way to monetise their huge fanbase.

The gap between the two clubs shows that Ed Woodward’s claim that United don’t have to be successful on the pitch to lead the Premier League off the pitch was overambitious,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

There’s no doubt that Manchester United are a huge brand and they will always sell out Old Trafford.

They are still exceptionally popular with sponsors and they have a huge global fan base.

But, converting that fan base into dollars is difficult.

The majority of Manchester United’s fan base is now based in Asia and they’ll do preseason tours there to monetise that.

The fact that the Glazers are sticking around suggests they have some ideas on how they’re going to do that.

If they manage to convert casual followers into people that spend cash, then we could easily see Manchester United return to the top spot which has been taken by City in the last three years.
