Tottenham expert in new dig at Giovani Lo Celso - 'There's no getting away from this...'

Giovani Lo Celso playing regularly in midfield is “not the answer” for Tottenham moving forward.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Spurs and Rangers defender Alan Hutton admitted the Argentine can be a creative influence but he needs more game time to prove his worth.

The 27-year-old played just 38 minutes of league football before his first start this season in Tottenham’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa – but his opener was cancelled out after Unai Emery’s side mounted a comeback.

A significant injury list forced Ange Postecoglou to start Lo Celso but Spurs remain keen on reinforcements this January – and as Football Insider revealed on 1 December, they are accelerating a deal for a midfielder following internal talks.

Hutton feels Lo Celso’s occasional moments of class are not enough to cement him as a reliable option for Postecoglou.

“You see him play well in flashes,” he told Football Insider.

“With the way Tottenham set up, Dejan Kulusevski was more the number 10 with Lo Celso alongside Bentancur.

“There’s no getting away from the fact that Lo Celso is a good player and he can make things happen, but moving forward I don’t think he’s the answer for Postecoglou.

“I think it was a great strike [against Aston Villa]. It took a deflection but it was a cracking goal.

“Yet again, he’s another one that needs more game time. He’s had cameo roles but this could be the opportunity to show people what he’s capable of, but I want more.”
