Celtic expert tears into two star men - 'I might get shot down in flames for this'

Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda are “not good enough” for Celtic and need to be replaced.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie admitted that they may come good in the future, but the club need experienced players immediately.

The pair arrived at Parkhead on New Year’s Eve in 2021 and both emerged as mainstays under Ange Postecoglou while Brendan Rodgers has also opted to utilise the duo.

In 76 Hoops appearances, Hatate has notched 15 goals and 16 assists in all competitions while Maeda has bagged 21 goals and 15 assists in 88 outings.

McAvennie remains unconvinced and has eyed a Scott Brown-like player who can provide stability rather than “just running forward”.

“Hatate and Maeda – the players that are coming in are just not good enough,” he told Football Insider.

“I might get shot down in flames for this but Celtic have players that might be good in a year’s time but are not good enough for the first team right now.

“That’s what Celtic need at the moment, they need experience.

“There’s so many players just running forward. They need a Scott Brown, they’ve not replaced him.

“And no disrespect to the captain Callum McGregor, he could tackle for supper!”
