Hutton urges Celtic to complete new signing after Joe Hart talks open

Celtic must address their “problem area” in the goalkeeper position despite opening talks with Joe Hart over a new contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers and Tottenham defender Alan Hutton feels Hoops number one Hart needs competition now he is 36 and looming contract expiration.

Since his move to Parkhead from Spurs in 2021, Hart has missed just seven of 123 games in all competitions for Celtic and has established himself as the undisputed number one amid a lack of options.

The former England international’s Hoops contract expires at the end of this season, and back-up options Scott Bain and Benjamin Siegrist have not been deemed good enough to genuinely challenge Hart.

Football Insider revealed last month that Celtic have opened talks over a new deal with the former Man City star but there is no agreement yet in place.

Hutton is confident he has a future at Celtic Park, but recruitment is essential.

“I wouldn’t be surprise if they kept him,” he told Football Insider.

“Obviously with his experience, everything he brings and he’s a great shot-stopper.

“They can rely on him but obviously the older he gets he probably won’t play as much.

“Celtic will look to strengthen. It has been a problem area in terms of who is there to push him and who’s the next on up to force his way into the team.

“I don’t really think they’ve got that. Brendan Rodgers likes to have his goalkeepers play with their feet and that will be the route he’ll go down.

“But Hart does need competition.”
