Kieran Maguire: FSG to avoid Liverpool takeover and 'won't be afraid of falling behind clubs'

Liverpool owners FSG will avoid buying a new club and building a multi-club network around the Merseyside giants despite the outcome of the latest Premier League vote.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that FSG will not be afraid of falling behind their rivals and will stick to their current ownership model.

All 20 Premier League clubs voted this month on whether to ban deals with related parties, including loan deals between clubs.

If passed, the ban would have made it difficult for the likes of Newcastle United and Manchester City to strike deals with clubs and companies linked to their ownership groups.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Liverpool voted with 12 other clubs to implement the ban, but it needed 14 votes to pass.

Multi-club organisations have grown more and more popular within the Premier League, with City involved in the City Football Group, Chelsea involved in the BlueCo network and Manchester United likely to become part of INEOS’s portfolio of clubs.

However, Maguire believes Liverpool and FSG are ‘smart’ enough to avoid falling behind clubs in multi-club networks and don’t need a takeover to prevent that.

Liverpool won’t be afraid of falling behind [rival] clubs in a multi-club network,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

The potential benefits of the multi-club ownership model are yet to be totally crystallised.

FSG appear to be going down the multi-sport route rather than the multi-club model.

So you can see why they have decided to vote with the 13 as opposed to the other clubs.

“Everybody acts from a perspective of self-interest, and there are financial benefits of the multi-club ownership model.

“But operationally, Liverpool are such a smart club that they probably feel that they don’t need to go down that particular avenue.
