James Maddison cited as pundit 'surprised' by Liverpool source's transfer reveal

It would be a “surprise” if Liverpool were targeting another midfielder this January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Tottenham and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson claimed the Reds would need to recruit a “very good” player to break into Jurgen Klopp’s “excellent” starting line-up.

As revealed by Football Insider (17 November), Liverpool are in the market for a new defensive midfielder going into January with Fluminense’s Andre one of their targets.

Following the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, the Reds recruited exclusively in the midfield during the summer, bringing in Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister.

Robinson hailed the summer business but warned Liverpool not to sign players “for the sake of it”.

“I think their recruitment was excellent in the summer,” he told Football Insider.

“We were looking at Liverpool and wondering what they were going to do because there was a lot of talk about where they were going to strengthen.

“Dominik Szoboszlai, for me, has had an impact similar to what James Maddison has had at Tottenham.

“Wataru Endo too, Gravenberch has come into the offing. There are a lot of questions about the Liverpool midfield and their strength in depth.

“But the recruitment at Liverpool has been excellent. I’m surprised if they were specifically targeting that area again.

“They’re a very, very strong squad and they can’t sign players for the sake of it.

“It will need to be a very good player to replace one they have in the starting 11.”
