Tottenham idol 'amazed' by Cristian Romero as controversy analysed

Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Tottenham defender Cristian Romero after his sending-off against Manchester City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one is happy for Romero to get sent off every now and then so long as he keeps aggression in his game.

Romero was shown a second yellow card in the second-half of Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Man City after tripping Jack Grealish.

The centre-half will now miss Spurs’ trip to Leicester City on Saturday (11 February).

In his 49 appearances for Tottenham, Romero has received 16 yellow cards and two reds.

When asked by Football Insider if Romero’s discipline is a problem, Robinson said: “Yes, he treads a fine line at times but I think it is good for Tottenham.

“He is the type of character and the type of player that they need in the side. He brings an aggression that no one else does.

“I would happily have him getting sent off every now and again to keep that little bit of bite in his game. In recent times, Spurs have not had that.

“Grealish was clever in the way that he got him booked. He knew exactly what he was doing. The referee had no choice but to send off Romero.

“It’s a shame that Romero will miss the next game because he was amazing at the weekend. But, as I said, I do not want him to change the way that he plays.”
