Djed Spence may have played last game for Tottenham amid Conte claim - expert

Paul Robinson has claimed Djed Spence’s Tottenham future is dependent on Antonio Conte.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one suggested Spence, 22, would be sold if Conte signs a new deal.

Spence has struggled for game time since joining Spurs from Middlesbrough in the summer.

On 31 January, the right-back joined Stade Rennais on loan for the remainder of the season.

Robinson believes a permanent exit will materialise if Conte, who is out of contract in the summer, remains in charge of the club next season.

“Spence needed to leave,” he told Football Insider.

“The manager clearly did not fancy him. He hardly played at all. You question who made that signing. The fact that Emerson Royal is playing ahead of him… That shows you that the manager does not want you.

“He needed to go out and play games. I do not think Spurs would have wanted him to go to another Premier League club. It is better that he has gone to France. It will allow his performances to go under the radar a little bit. It is not a league that is in the media here.

“I do not know if he has a future at Spurs. It is uncertain. He has not been near starting place. It has been a strange one.

“If Antonio Conte stays I cannot see Djed Spence staying. The manager’s contract is up at the end of the season though. Spence’s future is probably dependent on who is the manager. The current manager is clearly not a fan.”
