Sources: Transfer ban now 'a real possibility' for Tottenham as investigation begins

Tottenham are at risk of landing transfer ban after the FA re-opened a case over Jermain Defoe’s transfer in 2008, Football Insider has been told.

Spurs have been accused of using an unlicensed agent in negotiations during Defoe’s move to Portsmouth.

The FA investigated the matter following the conclusion of thet £7.5million deal and decided to take no action.

However, they stated this week that they are willing to re-open the investigation if new evidence is presented.

Previous breaches to the FA’s agent rules have resulted in fines, points deductions and transfer bans.

During the same year as Tottenham’s Defoe investigation, Luton Town were docked 10 points for similar breaches to agent regulations.

Football Insider has been told that a transfer ban is a ‘real possibility’ for the North London club if new evidence is presented to the FA.

An investigation by The Times claims that Defoe, Daniel Levy and Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp all dealt with unlicensed agent Mitchell Thomas.

The two-year investigation revisited Defoe’s transfer, bringing new evidence to light.

Thomas, who is a former West Ham and Tottenham player, is understood to have played a key role in the deal.

Levy is also alleged to have hired licensed agent Stuart Peters but failed to sign a representation contract required under FA regulation.

Levy paid Peters £1million for his role in the deal with total agent fees reaching £1.5million.
