West Ham expert rages at Moyes latest - 'for David to say that, it must be dire''

West Ham United need to play on the front foot rather than “just sitting back”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie can’t accept David Moyes’ tactics considering the quality in the squad.

The manager has faced criticism throughout his second stint from the West Ham fanbase who are eager to see a more exciting brand of football.

The Irons have had the 14th most shots in the Premier League this season with 145 – just five above relegation battler Luton Town and seven above Burnley – despite boasting exceptional creators including Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse.

McAvennie claimed the team focuses too much on the defensive side of the game, with Moyes himself admitting after their 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest Sunday (12 November) that his side were “slow” and he was “bored” watching from the dugout.

“For David to say that, it must be dire,” he told Football Insider.

“I just can’t accept that we have all these players and we can’t play quality, attractive football at the moment.

“Everyone of them wants to do the defensive side of it. There are no luxuries in that team.

“They all want to work their socks off and work hard, but you’ve got to let them play with conviction.

“The more we attack teams, the less teams will score against us.

“West Ham now have a squad that shouldn’t fear anyone. Defenders should be worried about what’s coming at them rather than just sitting back.

“We’re getting to the stage now that we need to go at teams.”
