Hutton: Chiefs are taking a 'huge risk' as Rangers-Aberdeen controversy takes new twist

Rangers should have been given a larger share of tickets for the Scottish League Cup final if Aberdeen couldn’t sell out their allocation.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Scotland defender Alan Hutton admitted he understands both fanbases’ frustrations behind the controversial handling of ticketing.

Dons fans were fuming that they received 19,500 tickets from the SPFL while Rangers were given 25,000 tickets for the Hampden Park showdown next month (17 December).

Aberdeen then had to cancel a number of the allocations after Gers fans got their hands on tickets in the Dons’ end.

Hutton noted the “heated” relationship between the fanbase and feels giving Rangers more tickets could alleviate safety concerns.

“I can see both sides of it,” he told Football Insider.

“The interesting thing is that it can be quite heated between Rangers fans and Aberdeen fans so they’re taking that risk to go in and sit with them.

“It’s a huge risk on their part. I remember when they were talking about a 50/50 split [for tickets], then it wasn’t and Rangers were getting more.

“There was an uproar about it and now Aberdeen are cancelling allocations.

“If that’s the case and Rangers want the extra tickets, why not offer it to them?

“I know you want it to be fair but if you can’t sell your allocation you might as well give it to the club that wants it.

“This stops all this stuff with fans trying to buy tickets in the Aberdeen end. For safety reasons, that’s not ideal.

“We’ll see how it pans out but I don’t think it would be a good idea to sit on the other side.”
